  3. Preparations for canonization

The honorary citizen of Wroclaw and Polish pope, Blessed John Paul II, will in a month be declared a saint. The canonization ceremony takes place at the Vatican on 27 April. Also preparing for this special day are residents of Wroclaw.

Events have been organized for several weeks linked with preparing for the canonization directly. On 28 March the University church held a gathering to celebrate the Way of the Cross with the Blessed John Paul II, which saw the participation of people with disabilities. "Participating in a celebration like this makes it possible to enter into an even deeper and more personal bond with Christ, and to comprehend the meaning of the cross and the suffering of Christ, and brings also a unity with people with disabilities", says Damian Lagoritis, who as a wheelchair user took part in the service last year. Another specific example, the Academic Way of the Cross (Akademicka Droga Krzyżowa), passes through the streets of the city by tradition a week before Good Friday.

Encouraging a spiritual preparation for the holiday, and thereby the canonization, is the Metropolitan of Wroclaw, Archbishop Józef Kupny, while joining in the prayer at their chapels will be Carmelite and Benedictine nuns. "The campaign is not only about meeting the needs of those who have too little time during the day for the Sacrament of Reconciliation", explained the Metropolitan of Wroclaw. "It is above all to show that Christ has the power today also to help cure, to raise a person up and to hold out a hand", he emphasized.
