Another batch of padlocks disappeared from Tumski Bridge which connects Ostrów Tumski with the Piasek Island. The padlocks were hung by lovers as well as tourists from outside Wroclaw to commemorate their love in a symbolic way. After closing the padlock they throw the key into the river. The bridge decorated with padlocks became a tourist attraction. First padlocks appeared there in 2008 r.
100 kilograms of padlocks above the heads
Padlocks - only the ones hung over the railing and bolts of the bridge - were cut by the workers of Road Authorities and City Maintance. - Again we were force to remove a direct danger in a form of padlocks hung over the heads of passers-by and tourists on Tumski Bridge - Ewa Mazur, the spokesperson of ZDiUM explained. - I know not everybody likes it but if somebody got hurt, we would be responsible - she added. At present 100 kilograms of padlocks were removed.
Let us remind you that in may of the previous year the workers of ZDiUM removed over 300 kilograms of padlocks hung over the railings, on the bridge's bolts and on chains, strings and key chains. - Bunches of padlocks and the individual ones weighting even over 2 kilos, swinging over the railings were a threat for the safety and we warned not to hung them there because all items over the railings are to be removed - Ewa Mazur stressed. The removed padlocks are in our storage place. They can be taken back starting on Tuesday 21.01.2014 during operating hours of the Lost and Found Office: from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 14:00, in the head office of Road Authorities and City Maintance on Długa street 49, in building H. One can obtain information on that subject calling 71 376-08-96. Attention! As some padlocks are connected with others it is worth taking a key or a sawto cut your padlock off. The padlocks removed in May 2013 were picked up by 30 people and more than half found their love proofs. I near future Tumski is to be renovated and at that point all padlocks will be removed.
