The arrival of spring marks the beginning of cleaning activities in Wroclaw's streets and bus stops. The Roads and City Management Office has commissioned relevant companies to perform cleaning activities at more than half a thousand bus shelters in Wroclaw. All shelters are expected to be sparkling clean by mid-April. They will be washed by specialist companies using pressure washers. “Cleaning activities by means of pressure washers are performed in the evenings and late at night so that bus stops can run like normal and passengers are duly protected”, says Ms Ewa Mazur, the Roads and City Management Office's representative. “The remaining tasks are carried out during the day in such a way that they do not disturb passengers.” Selected Wroclaw's bus shelters are taken care of by external contractors such as AMS and Stroer. These shelters are equipped with city lights. There are more than 450 such shelters and they must be washed manually.
The Roads and City Management Office will also have dirt removed from pedestrian islands, bollards and pedestrian safety barriers. “These activities will be carried out once the wet sweeping of the roads has been completed. For this reason, we work in agreement and collaboration with Ekosystem”, says Ms Ewa Mazur. The Roads and City Management Office also took to renovating pedestrian crossings. “Each year in spring, we repaint zebra crossings, restricted parking spaces, speed bumps, arrows and road lines”, enumerates the Office's spokeswoman.
The renovation began with repainting speed bumps and restricted parking spaces. The work must be carried out during the day when the sunlight is at its most intense. The temperature at night is still too low for the paint to dry and remain durable, but the weather conditions will be getting better every day. It is usually April that marks the beginning of the horizontal road markings renovation season, but the high season falls in May and June, when the temperature at night reaches approximately 15 Celsius degrees. Due to heavy daytime traffic in Wroclaw, the local main roads are repainted at night, because it is at night that selected road sections can be withdrawn from traffic for several hours, which is enough to use suitable equipment and leave the freshly painted markings to dry properly.
